Definitions Paragraph- Busche

Bradyn Busche ENG101- Dawn Diprince 10-18-12 MWP #2 Intro The unemployment rate is a major term that needs to be understood in order to fully take in the article and what it stands for. The rate is currently at 8.1, which means 8.1% of the population of these United States is currently out of work. This takes a major toll on the economy, which is a major reason it has a huge affect on the Election this year. The fact of the matter is that the president controls how many jobs are available, yes, but he cannot force people of the general public to find them. I for one could find another job in a heartbeat if I wanted to whether it be working at the hospital or working at McDonald’s. The president also cannot control a person’s ability to meet the criteria for the job itself. So in a way yes, the president does control the unemployment rate, but unless there are absolutely no jobs available I don’t believe that the President should be held responsible. Another key term that needs to be understood in this article is ‘Campaign strategy.’ Obviously this stands for the strategy of campaigning from both candidate, but it needs to be understood that this not only includes their debate tactics, it includes their campaign ads on television, their political views on major topics, their strategy to displaying those views, and how often it is emphasized throughout the political landscape. Both Obama and Romney differ in their political strategies but they both are similar in a way that they base their strategies based on the principle idea of pleasing the public that will be voting for them.

Introduction to MWP #2- Busche

Bradyn Busche ENG101- Dawn Diprince 10-18-12 MWP #2 Intro If we could vote for the Presidential Election right now instead of in a month, who would win? This article entitled “Why Obama is Winning, ” By Ross Douthat states that Obama would win, but that may not be the case in a month. Douthat states the victor of the Presidential Election in 2012 will be determined by the unemployment rate, plain and simple. This is very interesting because the way politics SHOULD work is the candidate with the most over all ideas should be the one walking into the oval office after the election, but in this article Douthat states that the general public is so focused on the unemployment rate and every little change in it that all other aspects or Romney’s and Obama’s campaign seems irrelative and uninformative. The author supports his claims by introducing the article with him having a meeting with a Junior White House Official and states what they talked about, which was almost exclusively about the unemployment rate.

Ethos, Pathos, Logos Analysis- Busche

Bradyn Busche October 16, 2012 ENG101- Dawn Diprince Ethos, Pathos, and Logos References in Article Ross Douthat uses much ethos in his article, “Why Obama is Winning,” to supporting his claims throughout the piece. He references items such as Don Peck’s book, “Pinched,” the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Rhonald Brownstein, President Obama, Mitt Romney, and a Junior White House Official. All these references are aspects of the paper that are possibly the most important. They are used in order make the article more credible and create a more persuasive argument to the reader. Without these references the paper would hardly even noticed by the general public and would bring shame to the company that published it, in this case The New York Times. Douthat uses pathos minimally in this article due to the fact that the writer’s purpose was to inform, and had little room for emotional appeal. Therefor Douthat had to appeal to the audience with ethos, which is nearly impossible, but I found that he did quite well through the use of formatting, diction and structure. What little pathos he did use included asking the reader a rhetorical question such as ‘Why is this?’ He also relates Republicans and Democrats by their assumptions about Mitt Romney’s campaign strategy. The author also uses logos in a way that supports his statements in the most powerful way possible. He begins by stating the dip in unemployment rate as 8.3% today, then follows it with the second quarter growth which both support President Obama and the article over all. He also states that the unemployment rate has gone down to 8.1%, just as predicted by the Junior White House Official, which also shows that Obama and his party knows that they are doing and what they are talking about. Using logos in a structural form as Douthat did, to me, seems incredibly affective in a way that couldn’t have been done any other way.

Essay Topic Article Summary- Busche

The article I chose was, "Why Obama Is Winning" by Ross Douthat. He states that if the election took place right now, Obama would win, but at the rate that the election is slowly depleting, Mitt Romney will soon take the lead. Douthat says in his article that the unemployment rate is the deciding factor in who will win the election. The unemployment rate is a hot topic, as it was in the first Presidential debate and common to most people it was the deciding factor as to who won the debate. The same principle applies to the entire election as well. Ross' article simply pointed that out and elaborated on it.

"Why Men Fail" Analysis- Busche

Bradyn Busche Tuesday, October 9, 2012 Dawn Diprince In the opinions addressed by David Brooks, New York Times columnist, he states agreements and disagreements with the opinions put forth by the author of “The End of Man.” He agrees with the idea that men are falling behind in the world yet disagrees with as to why. He states statistics such as only 40% about of bachelor degrees go to man along with 40% masters degrees, he also states that in 1954, 96% of the American men between the ages of 25 and 54 worked. Today, that number is down to 80%. Brooke also states that many believe in the theory that the information age economy rewards traits that women are more likely to possess. I for one agree with Brooke’s statements due to the fact he backs is statements with credibility, statistics, and information to support his cause. He states where he studied, at the national Federation of Independent business, what makes him credible, and uses proper diction to create an atmosphere that allows the audience to connect to the subject and make the reading appeal to the audience in a stronger way. Brooke’s, to me, created a more valid argument, had more credible sources, and stated his opinion more clearly and directly than the author of “The End of Man.” He created an atmosphere of informing the reader, not just lecturing him, and all in all made a great article that I learned much from. Thank you for reading.

Presidential Debate Response

Bradyn Busche 7 October 2012 ENG 101- Dawn Diprince Presidential Debate Analysis In the presidential debate between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, it started off with polite manners, etiquette, and respect. But after the first two minutes it went out the window due to the fact that Obama became laid back, repetitive, and used proper debate techniques. Romney on the other hand began to act over the top aggressive and at sometimes almost seemed rude. Obama constantly addressed Romney as ‘Governor Romney’ while Romney constantly referred to President Obama as ‘my opponent.’ This tactic was used on both ends to remind the audience who is the President with experience, and who is the governor who plans to take his place. Romney attempted to hide the idea that Romney is inferior to Obama in experience as president and what duties it in tales in first person. Each debater’s campaign had loads of ethos including American workers, Bill Clinton, Ronald Regan, and Donald Trump. Each person used statistics, facts, and pathos to support their claims and relate with the audience in an effort to thwart their opponent and gain an advantage. To me, the debate as a whole seemed balanced. Neither debater really did anything to wow me and push me toward their side. Romney was, in my opinion, overly aggressive and Obama was too laid back and almost seemed uninterested. All in all it seemed to me that the debate was ineffective on each end and was not very well executed.

Friedman Article Analysis- Busche

Bradyn Busche ENG101- Dawn Diprince 1 October 2012 Analysis of ‘New Rules In this article by Friedman, the author states that “If you want a decent job that will lead to a decent life today you have to work harder, regularly reinvent yourself, obtain at least some form of postsecondary education, make sure that you’re engaged in lifelong learning and play by the rules.” This is practically his thesis statement although it is buried in the middle of his article. He illuminates the idea that the president is not at fault, as most people believe. Contrary to what the majority of citizens of these United States would tell you, Jobs are out there, that doesn’t mean that people will go out and get them. Yes, it is the president’s job to make sure these jobs are constantly offered. He has led the horse to water, but he cannot be blamed for it not getting a drink. The typical stereotype for the rest of the world’s perspective on this country is that we are fat, lazy, and arrogant. These stereotypes don’t just appear out of nowhere, there has to be a reason. This reason is that often times we do take for granted the idea that we can almost 100% or the time get a job, whether it be at a law firm or at McDonalds. Friedman uses several credibal sources and references to support his statements and also backs it with statistics such as the unemployment rate for people holding four year degrees, two year degrees, a high school degree, or high school drop outs.
