Response to “The Web Means the End of Forgetting”
This article by Jeffrey Rosen demonstrates how the Internet has affected everyday lives, job interviews, and politics as well as school and careers.  Rosen states that Facebook has 500 million members, and twitter has over 100 million members, this demonstrates how far around the world that the Internet truly has a grasp over. There is at least one Facebook user in over 85% of countries of the world! Even difficult jobs done by the CIA, FBI, and police departments around the world that use facial recognition software can be done easily using ‘Face.com.”  Rosen references many sources to back his argument that include Microsoft, Henry Clay, Mark Zuckerberg, the University of Colorado, and Daniel Solove. Stating the fact that 75% of us recruiters requite doing online research about candidates shows that even a job career can be miraculously affected by someone’s history of using the Internet. The Internet is written in ink, therefore can never be erased or deleted. These references made by Rosen only supports his claim that hardly anyone in this world is affected in one way or another by the outreaches of the Internet. The Internet may be incredibly intimidating to some due to the possibility that the internet could take away opportunities such as the case of Stacy Snyder in which she lost her teaching degree because of an inappropriate picture posted on Myspace. But, the idea that the Internet never forgets can actually be beneficial to many as well as an asset because of the masses of information distributed to the users of it. Reputation defender is a program that hides embarrassing search results that are found when searching Google. This program has recently raised $15 million through purchasers who are desperate to hide disturbing or reveling posts.
