In this article entitled, “Slaves, Cannibals, and Infected Hyper-Whites:The Race and Religion of Zombies” (2012), Elizabeth McAlister demonstrates the renewed interest in zombie films due to zombies embezzlement of the mind with deeply symbolic structures that are a matter of ration and irrational thinking. It refers to popular horror films of today's society such as "Night of the Living Dead" "The Walking Dead" "Dawn of the Dead" "28 Days Later" and books such as "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies"(2009). McAlister shows the readers the allegory of zombies and the current events taking place. Her purpose is to show the symbolism behind the constantly seen zombie films of today's times. This, of course, is in order to allow the readers to understand all symbols located within the plot, story, characters, and sub meanings within the film. Her audience is a base of horror film viewers trying to fully understand films and all their rhetoric.

This video recorded on “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” speaks about CBS news’ idea that each time the word ‘nigger’ is written in the book “Adventures of Huckle Berry Finn” with the word ‘Slave.’ Both John Stewart and his guest argue against the idea that editing the original text is inappropriate due to the fact that if we edit one aspect of the book, that opens the door to edit other aspects of the book which completely gets rid of the original meaning put forth by the book. They also point out that editing the text to say ‘slave’ every time the word nigger is said is not much of an improvement. They point out that the word nigger is a general statement to black people while slave is just a job description that therefore makes editing the text seems invalid and obsolete.

The unemployment rate is a major term that needs to be understood in order to fully take in the article and what it stands for. The rate is currently at 8.1, which means 8.1% of the population of these United States is currently out of work. This takes a major toll on the economy, which is a major reason it has a huge affect on the Election this year. The fact of the matter is that the president controls how many jobs are available, yes, but he cannot force people of the general public to find them. I for one could find another job in a heartbeat if I wanted to whether it be working at the hospital or working at McDonald’s. The president also cannot control a person’s ability to meet the criteria for the job itself. So in a way yes, the president does control the unemployment rate, but unless there are absolutely no jobs available I don’t believe that the President should be held responsible. Another key term that needs to be understood in this article is ‘Campaign strategy.’ Obviously this stands for the strategy of campaigning from both candidate, but it needs to be understood that this not only includes their debate tactics, it includes their campaign ads on television, their political views on major topics, their strategy to displaying those views, and how often it is emphasized throughout the political landscape. Both Obama and Romney differ in their political strategies but they both are similar in a way that they base their strategies based on the principle idea of pleasing the public that will be voting for them.

If we could vote for the Presidential Election right now instead of in a month, who would win? This article entitled “Why Obama is Winning, ” By Ross Douthat states that Obama would win, but that may not be the case in a month. Douthat states the victor of the Presidential Election in 2012 will be determined by the unemployment rate, plain and simple. This is very interesting because the way politics SHOULD work is the candidate with the most over all ideas should be the one walking into the oval office after the election, but in this article Douthat states that the general public is so focused on the unemployment rate and every little change in it that all other aspects or Romney’s and Obama’s campaign seems irrelative and uninformative. The author supports his claims by introducing the article with him having a meeting with a Junior White House Official and states what they talked about, which was almost exclusively about the unemployment rate.

Ethos, Pathos, and Logos References in Article
Ross Douthat uses much ethos in his article, “Why Obama is Winning,” to supporting his claims throughout the piece. He references items such as Don Peck’s book, “Pinched,” the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Rhonald Brownstein, President Obama, Mitt Romney, and a Junior White House Official. All these references are aspects of the paper that are possibly the most important. They are used in order make the article more credible and create a more persuasive argument to the reader. Without these references the paper would hardly even noticed by the general public and would bring shame to the company that published it, in this case The New York Times.
Douthat uses pathos minimally in this article due to the fact that the writer’s purpose was to inform, and had little room for emotional appeal. Therefor Douthat had to appeal to the audience with ethos, which is nearly impossible, but I found that he did quite well through the use of formatting, diction and structure. What little pathos he did use included asking the reader a rhetorical question such as ‘Why is this?’ He also relates Republicans and Democrats by their assumptions about Mitt Romney’s campaign strategy.
The author also uses logos in a way that supports his statements in the most powerful way possible. He begins by stating the dip in unemployment rate as 8.3% today, then follows it with the second quarter growth which both support President Obama and the article over all. He also states that the unemployment rate has gone down to 8.1%, just as predicted by the Junior White House Official, which also shows that Obama and his party knows that they are doing and what they are talking about. Using logos in a structural form as Douthat did, to me, seems incredibly affective in a way that couldn’t have been done any other way.
Essay Topic Article Summary- Busche
The article I chose was, "Why Obama Is Winning" by Ross Douthat. He states that if the election took place right now, Obama would win, but at the rate that the election is slowly depleting, Mitt Romney will soon take the lead. Douthat says in his article that the unemployment rate is the deciding factor in who will win the election. The unemployment rate is a hot topic, as it was in the first Presidential debate and common to most people it was the deciding factor as to who won the debate. The same principle applies to the entire election as well. Ross' article simply pointed that out and elaborated on it.
